雅培理神父在尚未創立修會之前，已經看到當時的傳播媒體散播謬論，危害教會，因此感到極需將從事傳播工作的教友組織起來，捍衛教會。經過幾年的分辨，他創立保祿男修會和保祿女修會後，便在1917年著手組織保祿會贊助員，並獲得教區主教的批准，而獲得宗座批准則是在1988年3月11日。
贊助員經過培育，分享保祿會的神恩，以聖保祿的精神將耶穌導師道路、真理及生命的福音，實行在自己的生活中。保祿會贊助員每日祈禱，與保祿家庭的精神合一，祈求大眾傳播使徒工作所需要的恩寵，廣傳天國的喜訊。他們也獻上個人的痛苦或克苦與耶穌相連，以賠補大眾傳播工具在世界上所造成的惡。
贊助員可視個人的才能和能力來參與福傳的工作，例如：推薦教會的出版品，幫助人善用這些工具來福傳，或量力捐助福傳所需要的經費。所有許諾成為保祿會的贊助員，能分享保祿家庭為他們每年所奉獻的二千四百台彌撒，以及宗座所賜的大赦和特恩。
