戴格蘭．梅而珞修女，原名德蘭。1894年2月20日，在阿爾巴的卡斯塔尼篤出生，這個小農村隸屬於義大利北方畢耶蒙特區（Piemonte）。
德蘭的家庭務農，耕種技術優良，並且因著家庭氣氛安詳和睦、充滿智慧及儉樸的生活態度，而贏得鄉里的敬重與信任。
在安德肋和文生薩夫妻的四個孩子中，德蘭排行老二，也是唯一的女兒。這對夫妻的生活處處顯出基督徒的典範，並以簡樸的生活見證他們的信仰。
德蘭在卡斯塔尼篤上小學，她靈敏聰慧，在校表現優異，可惜體弱多病，父母不得不為她請家教在家學習。德蘭在佳蘭（Chiarla）小姐的教導和薰陶下，不僅學習學校的一般課程，靈修生活也獲得啟蒙。
德蘭漸漸長大後，開始渴望度修道生活，部分原因是受到身邊一些女性基督徒典範的影響，特別是她的母親和老師。但當她申請加入杜林的高托連格（Cottolengo）女修會時，卻因身體羸弱而未被接受。
因此，父母決定讓德蘭學習縫紉和刺繡，好能在家裡工作。她到杜林學習技能，之後回到家鄉成立一個小型的縫紉班。
德蘭對前來學做衣服或預備嫁妝的女孩展現誠摯的關懷。她不僅教導她們縫紉技巧，同時也將基督信仰的價值觀傳給她們。德蘭在生活的各層面、工作和人格上都協調一致，並努力將自己最好的傳授給學生，這是源於她家庭的榜樣。她總是不厭其煩地告訴她們：「人人都要有工作，每種工作都非常重要，都需要智慧與承諾。至於我們，要成為謙遜、溫順與服從的人。以平靜和信賴的心來完成託付給我們的事。用心去做，努力做得更好，並使技術日益精進。」她鼓勵她們懷著愛去做一切事，讓愛從內在深處湧現。
雅培理神父注意到德蘭這些特質，當時他還是阿爾巴聖堂的年輕神父。在動盪不安的二十世紀初，他正努力實踐一個遠大的夢想。
